On the beaches of Tana Beru, the sound of adzes on ironwood starts at dawn. Here, families of Konjo shipwrights have built phinisi for generations, passing the craft from father to son.
The plan is not on paper. It is in the hands and in the memory.

From keel to sail
A large phinisi can take two years to build. The hull is shaped first, plank by plank, before the frames are fitted — the reverse of most Western boatbuilding. Ceremonies mark each stage, from laying the keel to the launch.

Today's luxury phinisi combine this heritage with modern comforts — air-conditioned cabins, ensuite bathrooms and safety equipment to international standards.
