Few moments at sea compare with a manta ray gliding beneath you, four metres from wing tip to wing tip. In Komodo and Raja Ampat these encounters are common — and most of them happen at snorkelling depth.
Where to see them
- Manta Point and Karang Makassar, Komodo — year round, best from December to February
- Manta Sandy, Raja Ampat — a cleaning station from December to March
- Nusa Penida, Bali — Manta Bay, accessible on day charters

How to behave
Stay calm, stay low and never chase or touch. Mantas are curious and will often come closer if you hold still. Your guide will brief you before every swim.
