Raja Ampat sits just below the equator, which means warm water and lush islands all year round. But the sea has seasons, and choosing the right month makes the difference between glassy lagoons and long, bumpy crossings.
October to April: the sweet spot
This is the main sailing season. The south-east trade winds have dropped, the sea around Misool and Wayag turns calm, and visibility underwater often exceeds 25 metres. Most liveaboards and private phinisi operate only in these months.

- Calmest seas: November to February
- Manta season at Manta Sandy: December to March
- Best for photography: October and April, with softer light and fewer boats
May to September: quieter, but rougher
Strong winds from the south can make the open-water passages uncomfortable, and many yachts reposition to Komodo. Sheltered northern routes around Dampier Strait are still possible on shorter charters.
In January we had Wayag entirely to ourselves at sunrise. No other boat, no wind — just the sound of hornbills.

Getting there
Most voyages begin in Sorong, reached by a direct flight from Jakarta or Makassar. Your crew will meet you at the airport and transfer you to the harbour — plan to arrive the day before departure in case of flight delays.
